Lesson from a Market Research
Today I participated in a paid market research for Arby’s sandwiches. I must admit that I only once in my life visited Arby’s and at that time I ordered their curly fries.
Anyway, the task was to taste 5 different sandwiches and provide our personal opinion about the presentation and the taste of the sandwiches.
The study was held in the following manner: Initially we had to eat a cracker and a piece of celery to clear our pallets and then we were presented a complete sandwich. We had to bite in the sandwich until we could make up our opinion and then we filled out a 3-page survey on the sandwich. In between sandwiches we had a 5 minutes rest.
As a non-Arby’s customer I didn’t have much of an opinion about their food at the beginning of the study. However, after trying a couple of their sandwiches I realized that Arby’s sandwiches weren’t that bad and I wondered, “why didn’t I ever go to Arby’s and try their sandwiches?”
Okay I admit, I am not a big fast food eater period but that is not the point I want to make.
I came up with the question, “why aren’t there companies out there who offer market research studies for new and different activities such as riding the bike for people who are joggers, bungee jumping for people who are afraid of heights, scrapbooking for men.”
And I thought to myself, if people were offered a small token to try out new activities, approaches, or tasks would they or would they stay in their box?
As people we love to stay in our comfort zone, we like to eat the same food, go to the same places, do the same activities. But then there are so many people who are so discontent with their lives and they just cannot figure out what to do with it. Maybe an inclusion in a market study on new activities would give these individuals the push and the insight for change.
But then, why do we need to wait for an outside organization to make this happen? All we have to do is step out of our box and do it.
Now, I am not 100% sure if I will become a “regular” Arby’s customer but I made a commitment to my life to try out something new at least once a week.
Life will be so much tastier!!!
